Maths

A Little School With Big Ideas

Intent:

Through well-structured lessons in a caring and supportive school environment, we provide children the opportunity to reach their potential in all subjects and get ready for their next steps in education. This includes our Mathematics curriculum. Maths is a subject that is intrinsic to understanding and changing the world around us. It provides useful tools to be used in a range of subjects across the curriculum. These tools include problem solving skills, logical reasoning and the ability to think in abstract ways. We strive to provide many opportunities for children to practise and apply the skills that they have learned in maths lessons in practical problem-solving situations, developing a mastery of the subject through small step learning which enables children to achieve to the greatest of their ability.

The National Curriculum for mathematics describes what should be taught in each year group, which combined with Moggerhanger Primary School Calculation Policy ensures progression and high expectations in mathematics.

The aims of teaching mathematics are:

  • To encourage and promote a love of learning through a variety of creative, imaginative practical activities, discussions and explorations.

  • To become fluent in the fundamental concepts of maths including a well-developed sense of number and know relevant number facts such as number bonds and multiplication tables, doubles and halves.

  • Draw on a range of calculation strategies to calculate efficiently.

  • To promote mathematical confidence.

  • To develop the ability to problem-solve through reasoning and decision making using known mental facts.

  • To explain their mathematical reasoning, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, developing a justification for their working using the correct mathematical terms.

  • To develop a practical understanding of the ways that information is gathered and presented and explain and make predictions from graphs, tables and diagrams.

  • Develop an understanding of the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Implementation:

At Moggerhanger Primary we use White Rose Maths as our dedicated scheme for teaching maths across all year groups. White Rose primary maths resources are designed to instill a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities.

  • Our maths resources include schemes of learning and a wide variety of supporting material, including high quality maths worksheets, teaching slides, video lessons and more.

  • To help monitor understanding and progress throughout the year, we also provide end of block and end of term assessments.

  • Our primary maths resources cover all the essential topics in key stage 1 and key stage 2. They include times tables, the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), basic decimals and fractions, percentages, number system use and more.

Our 'Big Ideas' Threads:

Put numbers first: We keep number at the heart, because we believe confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.

Put depth before breadth: reinforce knowledge again and again.

Encourage collaboration: children progress through the schemes as a group, supporting each other as they learn.

Focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: give children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.

Impact:

  • Reception Baseline Assessment

  • White Rose half termly assessment completed during assessment week (penultimate week of each half term)

  • Data drop on SIMS (steps Aut1/Spr1/Sum1)

  • Update all NC statements on SIMS (Aut1/Spr1/Sum1)

  • KS2 SATS
