Religious Education

A Little School With Big Ideas

Intent:

The RE Agreed Syllabus for 2018–2023 asserts the importance and value of RE for all pupils, with ongoing benefits for an open, articulate and understanding society. The following purpose statements underpin the syllabus, which is constructed to support pupils and teachers in fulfilling them:

  • RE contributes dynamically to children and young people’s education in schools by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

  • In RE, pupils learn about religions and beliefs in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions.

  • They learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response and to agree or disagree respectfully.

  • RE teaching therefore should equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and beliefs, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities.

  • It should develop in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society, with its diverse religions and beliefs.

  • Pupils should gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence. They should learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.

The purpose of RE is captured in the principal aim, which is intended to be a shorthand version for day-to-day use. It should be considered a doorway into the wider purpose of the subject, as articulated above.

The principal aim of RE is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

Implementation:

At Moggerhanger Primary School we implement the agreed RE Syllabus as the syllabus enables our pupils to develop wholistically, while developing their own thoughts, and opinions and learning to respect those of others, ensuring our community is open and welcoming to families and cultures from across the world.

We carefully select the RE units taught to support pupils to develop knowledge and skills for communicating in a progressive form through our mixed age classes, while also ensuring our schemes of work reflect our community. Each half term pupils explore a new ‘Key Question’ which acts as the catalyst for research, debate and developing understanding to enable children to draw their own conclusions to the original question.

Our RE teaching ensures pupils can meet the principle aims of the locally agreed syllabus through three core elements, included in each unit of learning. Making sense of beliefs, understanding the impact and making connections. These core elements underpin all of our RE teaching.

Impact:

The agreed syllabus offers flexible assessment opportunities. These are based on age-related end-of-phase outcomes, linked to the teaching and learning approach. Each unit has specific outcomes that help pupils to achieve the end-of-phase outcomes in relation to the knowledge taught in that unit. Teachers assess pupils through formative and summative tasks which help inform their teacher led judgement which is monitored on a termly basis.
