A Little School With Big Ideas
Phonics
Phonics at Moggerhanger Primary School:
Our Phonics Coordinator is: Mrs L Robbins
At Moggerhanger Primary School we follow the DFE approved 'Twinkl Phonics' scheme to teach Systematic Synthetic Phonics. This is a comprehensive programme that is taught from Pre-School (where appropriate to the individual child) upwards, with a dynamic, multi-sensory approach. For an overview of the whole Phonics scheme, and what children will learn in each 'Level' (or Phase), please download this document:
Daily sessions are taught in ability groups, so that objectives covered closely match the needs of all learners. The daily sessions are 15 minutes, and are structured as follows:
-
Revisit and Review
-
Teach
-
Practise
-
Apply
Assesment:
Children are assessed at the end of each half term to check how they are progressing with their phonic knowledge. Following these assessments, teachers will make adjustments to groupings as necessary. Where children are not making the expected progress, additional sessions will be put in place, which may be led by a teacher, teaching assistant or trainee teacher. These ensure that children make accelerated progress to achieve age-related expectations.
Phonics and Reading - 'Rhino Readers'
It is so important that children are able to revise and apply everything they have been taught through their phonics lessons in their reading books. Reading books should follow exactly the same progression as the phonics scheme so that, at any point, children only encounter texts which are fully decodable for their phonics knowledge. Therefore we have invested in the corresponding Twinkl reading scheme, 'Rhino Readers'. The books are matched perfectly with the phonics scheme, therefore if your child is learning 'Level 2' phonics lessons, they will receive a 'Level 2' reading book. Watch this video to find out more about how the phonics and Rhino Readers are matched:

Once children have completed Level 6 phonics, they will move onto Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar activities for 15 minute sessions per day, usually this is in Year 3.
To understand our Twinkl Phonics scheme in detail, you may wish to download the full handbook which contains a wealth of information on Phonics. This is available to download and view here:
Supporting your child at home:
We have put together a range of information and accompanying resources for you to access from home, which you will find at the bottom of this page. To find out which Level/Phase your child is currently learning at school, please contact your class teacher via Class Dojo.
Phonics Screening Check:
For more information about the Phonics Screening Check, please download this presentation, which was shared with parents at our curriculum meeting.
Pure Sounds:
It is very important that sounds are practised with the correction pronunciation, often referred to as 'pure sounds'. To help with learning these, please refer to the following video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCI2mu7URBc
